Picnic in a Garden
An interactive work that encourages contemplation
inspired by Édouard Manet’s Le déjeuner sur l’herbe (The Luncheon on the Grass),
Picnic in the Garden was created and donated by the artist to NUS to enliven spaces for the NUS Community. This particular piece is interactive and can even be sat on, inviting viewers to have their own picnic on the sculpture while reflecting on their position in nature within an urbanized environment.
The work is made combining Delia’s signature mosaic techniques with Glassfibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC), a process developed in Prvacki’s experimental approach to pushing the artistic boundaries of ceramics.
To protect the base of the artwork, a mixed-design material incorporating nanotechnology and nanomaterials, such as graphene oxide, was applied. Developed by the NUS Centre for Advanced 2D Materials, the material protects the sculpture from water and chemical exposure which makes it more resilient against weathering, and sustainable to stand the test of time.
Picnic in the Garden was first exhibited at Fort Canning Park in 2006 as part of Prvacki’s Plein Air exhibition. Find out more about the artist and artwork here.
