Embrace Me

The Start (2006)

The idea of “embracing columns” dated back to a series of tall mosaic columns created for the beach in the Plein Air exhibition during 2006.
It was a very successful initiative and I was encouraged by the way how the public interacted and used the spot for photo shuts, displaying amazement, joy, moments of happiness.

The theme reoccurred in 2019 when we were invited to create a special project for the Children Biennale at National Gallery in Singapore.

Responding to the given theme “Embrace”- the idea of embracing columns became the foundation for conceiving the BIG HUG project, an ample and complex site-specific installation meant for children to participate and get immersed in a series of activities, with aim of enhancing visual, artistic education.

It was a highly satisfactory gratification and recognition when Milenko and I were eventually selected and invited to participated in the International Children Biennale at MMCA in Seoul.

Collaborative sculptural installation by Delia & Milenko Prvacki
Mixed media, size variable
Realized by MMCA design team

Four sequences of the original installation were implemented, adapted, and redeveloped with the ambience, location and the climate of the Korean capital in mind. The concept of “embracing/hugging” columns was reinterpreted for children to relate to  characteristic colors and nature’s transformation during the succession of seasons.

The material of each column was selected appropriately, its chromatic identity and texture giving the visitors an appeal to “touch” it, expressing the love for nature and beauty of each season, with reference to the visual representation of winter, spring, summer and autumn.

The project offered aesthetically appealing and emotionally, educationally enhancing, meant to give children a memorable experience of interacting with artwork.

Three other distinctive and highly interactive works were Milenko‘s large mural depiction of “Day & Night” time table, “Embrace a cause” and “Turning Table”.

"Turning Table” is a notable favourite of the children. Created in ceramic and fine mosaic capturing highly detailed variety of dishes, irresistibly stimulating children to “play” and “enjoy” food by touching and feeling the sculptural, visual embodiment of otherwise familiar appearance of meals.
